International Turtle Day

Turtles are reptiles that live in oceans, rivers, lakes, forests, grasslands, and savannas around the world. The International Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23rd with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of conserving these fascinating creatures. Turtles are reptiles that have existed for millions of years, and their presence in ecosystems is essential to maintaining natural balance.
The protection of turtles is essential due to their role in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. They are important for the balance of coastal ecosystems and help maintain biodiversity. Many turtle species are endangered, so their conservation is crucial to preserving the planet's biological diversity.
History of International Turtle Day
International Turtle Day has been celebrated for more than two decades. It was established by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and conserving terrestrial and marine turtles. Since then, this observance has gained popularity and become a global platform for awareness and action benefiting sea turtles.
It was founded in 1990 by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson with the mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and care for endangered turtles, as well as to promote education and awareness about the importance of conserving these species.
ATR works in collaboration with wildlife shelters, specialized veterinarians, and volunteers to provide medical care, rehabilitation, and relocation for turtles in need. They also focus on adopting rescued turtles, finding safe and suitable homes for them.
Mythology and Turtles
Long ago, in mythology, there was a maiden named Quelone who lived near a river. There was a grand wedding feast between the gods Hera and Zeus, to which everyone was invited, including the animals. But Quelone decided to stay home instead of going. This angered the gods, especially Hermes.
Hermes, the messenger of the gods, descended from the sky and threw Quelone's house into the river where she lived. At that moment, Quelone transformed into a turtle. Since then, the turtle always carries its home on its back because it loved staying in its home so much.
That is how turtles became special animals that carry their home everywhere. The Greek word "Khelônê" means turtle, and that word is used to describe these wonderful animals.
On Turtle Day, we remember this story and celebrate these unique animals that teach us to carry our home and protection with us always.
