Turtle Release in Fuerteventura

The Island Council of Fuerteventura, under the direction of Carlos Rodríguez in the Department of Environment, has launched the exciting activity season of the 'Know to Protect' 2023/2024 program, immersing first and second grade students from CEIP Agustín Millares Carlo in a unique experience of releasing sea turtles. This event marked the long-awaited return of environmental education activities with the release of two specimens of green turtle on the beautiful Playa Blanca.

The First Loggerhead Turtle
On May 9, when a green turtle was found on the coast of Gran Tarajal. Its left fin was entangled in a marine debris net, and its condition was critical. The turtle Caretta caretta showed muscle problems and shell infection, as well as dehydration and weight loss.
The Second Loggerhead Turtle
On May 17, another loggerhead turtle needed help in Morro Jable. It was admitted to the center weighing only 4.25 kilos and showed signs of entanglement on the neck and right front fin, along with severe dehydration. A deep wound on the upper neck severely affected its muscles. After months of care and attention, this brave creature reached a healthy weight of 5.8 kilos.

The Environment Councilor, Carlos Rodríguez, expressed his satisfaction with the release of the first turtle in Playa BlancaAdditionally, she highlighted "the importance of continuing to educate society about the preservation of our marine life and the urgent need to reduce microplastic pollution on our coasts." The Minister of Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, was also present at this moving event.

These releases are not just isolated events. They are part of the 'Back Home' project, which is included in the Environmental Education program of the Ministry of Environment.
