The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, under the direction of Carlos Rodríguez in the Department of Environment, has launched the exciting activity season of the 'Know to Protect' 2023/2024 program, immersing first and second grade students from CEIP Agustín Millares Carlo in a unique experience of releasing sea turtles. This event marked the long-awaited return of environmental education activities with the release of two specimens of loggerhead turtle at the beautiful Playa Blanca.

Rescue of the turtles

The First Loggerhead Turtle

On May 9, a loggerhead turtle was found on the coast of Gran Tarajal. Its left flipper was entangled in a net of marine debris, and its condition was critical. The Caretta caretta turtle showed muscular problems and a shell infection, as well as dehydration and weight loss.

The Second Loggerhead Turtle

On May 17, another loggerhead turtle needed help in Morro Jable. It arrived at the center weighing only 4.25 kilos and showed signs of entanglement around its neck and right front flipper, along with severe dehydration. A deep wound on the upper part of its neck seriously affected its muscles. After months of care and attention, this brave creature reached a healthy weight of 5.8 kilos.

The Release of the Turtles

The Environment Councillor, Carlos Rodríguez, expressed his satisfaction with the release of the first turtle at Playa Blanca. He also highlighted "the importance of continuing to educate society about the preservation of our marine life and the urgent need to reduce microplastic pollution on our coasts." The Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Paloma Hernández, was also present at this emotional event.

Environmental Education and a Sustainable Future

These releases are not simply isolated events. They are part of the 'Back Home' project, which is part of the environmental education program of the Department of Environment. This program aims to raise awareness among young people about the protection of sea turtles and other threatened species, encouraging active community participation in their preservation.

The stories of these two loggerhead turtles remind us of the importance of marine conservation and how human action can make a difference in the lives of these creatures. Let us continue striving to protect our marine environment and promote a sustainable future for all the species that inhabit it.
