A good diet for turtles is based on variety in the foods a turtle species can eat, providing all the vitamins it needs to develop properly. To absorb vitamins properly and keep a healthy metabolism, aquatic turtles need sunlight. As we have explained in other articles, if our turtle does not get UV light it will not develop properly. There are UVB lamps on the market that can simulate the sun's rays.

The turtles we get usually come from breeders and are used to being fed prepared food, while others come straight from the wild, where they eat a completely different diet from the one we can offer them.

The staple food of aquatic turtles should always be turtle sticks, turtle food or turtle pellets. These usually contain the vitamins aquatic turtles need, so they should be the main food we use.

Homemade food for aquatic turtles

Below we show the homemade foods for turtles that we can give to aquatic turtles. Remember that commercial food should be the staple diet; you can add the following foods 1 or 2 days a week:

Animal food

As animal food, we can give aquatic turtles mealworms, crickets, snails, chicken hearts, raw chicken or chicken breast. You can also give them small pieces of salmon or raw fish, mussels, prawns, clams and raw squid.

Live food

Live food for turtles can be bought in shops specialising in reptiles and fishing supplies. It includes bloodworms, tubifex and brine shrimp (Artemia salina). Small water snails are a natural option that will also help filter the water by eating the leftover food the turtle does not eat. It is best to breed live food rather than collect it from the wild, as it can pass parasites on to turtles.

Vegetables and greens

Suitable vegetables for aquatic turtles include carrot, lettuce, pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, peas and boiled sliced mushrooms.

Fruit

Fruit such as apple, banana and strawberry should only be given to aquatic turtles occasionally, not as regularly as the foods above, because it contains a lot of sugar that is not good for them.

Pieces of food should be smaller than the turtle's head so it can eat without difficulty or choking. Avoid giving turtles processed food such as sausages, cooked ham or other processed products.

How much food does an aquatic turtle need?

When it comes to how much to feed your aquatic turtle, remember that turtles are cold-blooded animals with a slow metabolism. How much food they need depends on their size, age and activity level, so you should adjust their diet accordingly.

As a general rule, the amount of food you should give aquatic turtles is what they can eat in 10 to 15 minutes. Anything more is excess that will dirty the water, lower water quality and mean poorer care for our turtles.

Aquatic turtles have big appetites and often beg for food frequently, but it is important not to overfeed them, as this can lead to disease. During their first year of life, they can be fed once a day. In their second year, feeding every other day is recommended, and from then on twice a week is enough.

Automatic turtle feeder

A turtle food dispenser is a useful accessory to make sure aquatic turtles are fed regularly when nobody is at home, for example when you go on holiday. The automatic feeder feeds the turtles on a set schedule.

Aquatic turtles are omnivores. They can eat many foods: commercial foods such as sticks, which should be their staple diet, and natural foods such as meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. Remember that an aquatic turtle's diet should be varied and balanced, and avoid overfeeding them, as they can become obese and develop other health problems.

When you buy aquatic turtles in a pet shop, they often come with a tub of small larvae and dried shrimp (gammarus) as food. However, gammarus are not a suitable food source for turtles, as they lack the nutrients needed for balanced development.

Foods aquatic turtles should not eat

In this guide we have shown you which foods are good for our aquatic turtles and the best brands of aquatic turtle food. We also cover what your aquatic turtles should not eat.

Dried shrimp

When you buy aquatic turtles in a pet shop, they often come with a tub of small larvae and dried shrimp (gammarus) as food. However, gammarus are not a suitable food source for turtles, as they lack the nutrients needed for balanced development.

Processed food

Turtles should not eat processed food such as biscuits, sweets or bread. These foods contain artificial ingredients and preservatives that can harm their health.

Fatty food

Turtles should not eat fatty food such as cheese or fatty meat, because their digestive system is not designed to process large amounts of fat.

Choosing the right food for aquatic turtles is an important part of caring for these reptiles and their wellbeing. It is essential to give them a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods so they get all the nutrients they need.

Aquatic turtles are omnivores and can eat a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruit, insects and small animals. We should not overfeed them, as too much food can cause obesity and health problems.

Food for aquatic turtles should be specially formulated for them, as it contains the right nutrients in the right amounts. You should also avoid giving them processed food or food high in fat, salt or sugar.

What does an aquatic turtle eat?

In the wild, aquatic turtles, like river turtles, are omnivores, which means they can eat a wide variety of both plant and animal foods. Their diet varies depending on the species and its natural environment.

What do turtles feed on? In general, aquatic turtles eat large amounts of aquatic plants such as algae, water lilies and other freshwater plants. They can also eat a variety of insects, small fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates that live in the water.

River turtles in particular have a more varied diet than other freshwater turtles. They can eat algae, leaves from trees and plants, fruit, insects, fish, snails, crabs and other small animals.

What do baby aquatic turtles eat?

However, not all aquatic turtles are the same, and their diet can vary depending on their age, size and habitat. For example, younger turtles usually eat more protein and fewer plants than adults, which is why we recommend Sera Raffy Baby, which is higher in protein.
