World Turtle Day

Turtles are reptiles that inhabit oceans, rivers, lakes, forests, grasslands, and savannas all over the world. World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23rd with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of conserving these fascinating creatures. Turtles are reptiles that have existed for millions of years, and their presence in ecosystems is essential for maintaining natural balance.
Protecting turtles is essential due to their role in both marine and terrestrial ecosystems. They are important for the balance of coastal ecosystems and help maintain biodiversity. Many species of turtles are endangered, so their conservation is crucial to preserving the planet's biological diversity.
History of World Turtle Day
World Turtle Day has been celebrated for more than two decades. It was established by American Tortoise Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and conserving land and sea turtles. Since then, this commemoration has gained popularity and has become a global platform for awareness and action in support of sea turtles.
It was founded in 1990 by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson with the goal of rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing care for endangered turtles, as well as promoting education and awareness about the importance of conserving these species.
ATR works in collaboration with wildlife shelters, specialized veterinarians, and volunteers to provide medical care, rehabilitation, and relocation for turtles in need. They are also dedicated to the adoption of rescued turtles, finding safe and suitable homes for them.
Mythology and turtles
A long time ago, in mythology, there was a maiden named Chelone who lived near a river. There was a great wedding feast between the gods Hera and Zeus, to which everyone was invited, even the animals. But Chelone decided to stay home instead of going. This angered the gods, especially Hermes.
Hermes, the messenger of the gods, descended from the sky and threw Chelone's house into the river where she lived. At that moment, Chelone was transformed into a turtle. Since then, the turtle always carries its house on its back, because she had wanted so much to stay in her home.
That is how turtles became special animals that carry their home everywhere. The Greek word "Khelônê" means turtle, and that word is used to describe these wonderful animals.
On Turtle Day, we remember this story and celebrate these unique animals that teach us to always carry our home and our protection with us.
